A collision between a Singapore-registered bunker tanker and a Malta-registered bulk carrier occurred in the early hours of September 1, 2025, approximately eight kilometres south of Tanah Merah, Malaysia, resulting in a minor oil spill.
The incident involved the Marine Dynamo, a Chevron-chartered hybrid-electric bunker tanker, and the Flag Gangos, a bulk carrier. Both vessels remain stable following the collision. According to initial reports, a light sheen of marine gas oil (MGO) was observed on the water’s surface, believed to have leaked from a service tank located above the tanker’s waterline.
Authorities have clarified that the fuel in question is lighter than heavy bunker oil and is expected to evaporate and biodegrade quickly, limiting long-term environmental damage.
All crew members from both vessels were reported safe. One sailor aboard the Marine Dynamo sustained minor bruises and sprains but is being treated onboard and does not require evacuation.
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has deployed patrol craft, oil spill response vessels, and drones to monitor and manage the affected area. Efforts are currently focused on dispersing the oil sheen to prevent it from spreading. Navigational broadcasts have also been issued to alert ships in the busy Singapore Strait, though officials confirmed there has been no disruption to maritime traffic.
A formal investigation into the cause of the accident is underway, with authorities working closely with the vessel operators to assess structural damage and prevent further leakage.
Collisions in the congested waters near Singapore and Malaysia remain a serious concern for the maritime industry, given the region’s importance as one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes. While the impact of this incident appears limited, experts note that it underscores the need for continued vigilance, enhanced vessel traffic management, and strict adherence to safety protocols.
