Liepaja, Latvia — January 26, 2026
Stena Line has completed the acquisition of terminal operator Terrabalt in the Latvian port of Liepaja, formally taking over RoRo, bulk and general cargo operations at the facility. The transaction has received all required approvals from competition authorities and relevant government institutions, with Stena Line now officially registered as the owner.
The acquisition marks a significant milestone in Stena Line’s long-term strategy to strengthen trade resilience and logistics capacity in the Baltic Sea region. Liepaja, Latvia’s third-largest port, plays a strategic role in regional and international supply chains and serves as an important gateway for Baltic trade flows. Stena Line currently operates the Liepaja–Travemünde (Germany) ferry route with two vessels.
Following the completion of the deal, the terminal will be renamed Stena Line Ports Liepajas SEZ, reflecting its integration into Stena Line’s growing Baltic port network.
“This is a logical next step in our development in the Baltics and reflects our strong belief in the region and its long-term trade potential,” said Liene Lemane, Trade Director for the Baltic Sea North at Stena Line. “The deal has now been closed, and we are officially the owner of the terminal operations in Liepaja.”
Modernisation and Long-Term Development
Stena Line plans to gradually modernise and develop the terminal and its infrastructure, with a focus on safety, security, customer experience and efficient traffic management within the terminal area. The company emphasised that improvements will be implemented in stages while maintaining stable and reliable operations for customers.
“Development takes time, and step by step we will improve the terminal in Liepaja while continuing to ensure dependable service,” Lemane said. “We have already gone through a similar journey in Ventspils, which we acquired nearly three years ago and successfully integrated. Liepaja will follow a similar path.”
In parallel, the Liepaja Special Economic Zone Authority will undertake construction works to rebuild Berth 46 at Liepaja Port. The project is scheduled for completion by 31 December 2027 and is expected to further enhance the port’s infrastructure and handling capacity.
Strengthening the Baltic Network
The Liepaja acquisition reinforces Stena Line’s Baltic Sea footprint, which already includes port operations in Ventspils and Karlskrona, as well as ferry routes connecting Latvia, Sweden, Germany and Poland. The move supports the company’s broader ambition to build resilient, integrated logistics solutions across Northern Europe.
“The Baltics are vital to European trade, and we see strong long-term growth potential in the region,” said Carl-Johan Hellner, COO Ports & Terminals and Head of Group Strategy at Stena Line. “Building resilient supply chains requires a long-term mindset and close partnerships. We are proud of our collaboration with customers and Latvian stakeholders.”
Stena Line also highlighted the importance of cooperation with local and national authorities in Latvia, acknowledging the support of the Latvian government, the Liepaja municipality and the Liepaja Special Economic Zone.
“Together, we can continue to develop Liepaja as a competitive and future-ready port,” Lemane concluded.
Stena Line is one of Europe’s leading ferry operators, running around 40 vessels across 19 routes in Northern Europe and the Mediterranean. The company plays a central role in European logistics by combining sea, road and rail transport, while also maintaining a strong presence in passenger travel and tourism.
