Thailand-based container shipping line Regional Container Lines (RCL) has unveiled plans to expand its footprint into East Africa, positioning the Port of Mombasa as a strategic regional hub for its operations.
The development was announced by RCL Regional Vice President Capt. Derek Png during a courtesy visit to the Managing Director of the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), Capt. William Ruto, in Mombasa. The engagement underscored growing interest by Asian carriers in East Africa’s maritime and logistics sector, driven by rising trade volumes and the port’s expanding role as a gateway to the hinterland.
With more than four decades of experience in global shipping, RCL is a well-established player in containerized trade, particularly known for its strong feeder network linking major transshipment hubs with secondary and emerging ports. The company operates a versatile fleet, ranging from smaller vessels of about 400 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) to larger container ships with capacities of up to 12,000 TEUs, enabling flexible deployment across diverse trade lanes.
RCL’s planned entry into the East African market is expected to significantly strengthen feeder connectivity at the Port of Mombasa, which serves not only Kenya but also landlocked countries such as Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan, and parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Enhanced feeder services are anticipated to improve schedule reliability, reduce transit times, and offer shippers greater connectivity to Asian and global markets.

For the Port of Mombasa, the move aligns with ongoing efforts to attract new shipping lines, deepen port competitiveness, and consolidate its status as the largest and most important port in the region. Increased carrier presence is also expected to translate into higher cargo throughput, improved utilization of port infrastructure, and broader economic benefits across the logistics value chain.
RCL’s expansion plan comes at a time when East Africa is witnessing renewed interest from international shipping lines, supported by port modernization initiatives, hinterland connectivity projects, and growing import-export demand. If реализed as planned, RCL’s presence could further integrate Mombasa into regional and global container shipping networks, reinforcing its role as a critical maritime hub along the Indian Ocean corridor.
