Koper, Slovenia — The Port of Koper operator, Luka Koper, has placed a new order for four additional electric Rubber-Tyred Gantry (RTG) cranes from Konecranes, marking another significant step in its long-term terminal modernization and electrification programme. The order was booked in the third quarter of 2025, with delivery scheduled for the second quarter of 2026.
Strengthening Terminal Electrification
The new electric RTGs will replace older diesel-powered units currently in use at the container terminal. The cranes will operate using a cable reel power system connected to the local grid, supported by onboard battery technology that allows smooth and safe movement between container stacks. Each unit will also feature advanced safety systems, including Konecranes’ Truck Lift Prevention technology.
This order follows an earlier acquisition of four electric RTGs placed in 2024, demonstrating Luka Koper’s ongoing commitment to reducing emissions, improving energy efficiency, and increasing the share of fully electric equipment across its container yard.
Boosting Efficiency and Sustainability
By expanding its fleet of electric cranes, the Port of Koper aims to enhance operational efficiency, lower fuel-related costs, and improve working conditions by reducing noise and exhaust emissions. The investment aligns with Konecranes’ Ecolifting vision, which promotes environmentally efficient lifting technologies for greener port operations.
Strategic Growth at the Adriatic Gateway
The acquisition forms part of Luka Koper’s broader terminal development strategy, which includes yard expansion, new storage zones, and improved container handling capacity. With growing volumes and pressure on space, the port continues to invest in modern equipment to maintain its position as a key logistics hub for Central and Eastern Europe.
The four new electric RTGs are expected to play a central role in supporting the port’s capacity growth and sustainability objectives over the coming years.
