Singapore / Global – August 27, 2025 — Leading maritime engineering and shipbuilding group Seatrium has been awarded a significant contract by Golar Hilli Corporation, a subsidiary of Golar LNG, to upgrade the floating liquefied natural gas unit Hilli Episeyo. The work is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2026 and will extend the vessel’s operational life while enhancing its winter resilience.
Scope of Upgrade and Redeployment Plans
The contract covers a comprehensive suite of modifications designed for redeployment offshore Argentina’s Gulf of San Matías, in Rio Negro Province. Key components of the upgrade include:
- Engineering and procurement of long-lead parts
- Structural repairs and general life extension works
- Winterization features to bolster cold-weather performance
- Installation of a modern soft-yoke mooring system for enhanced station-keeping
Once upgraded, the FLNG Hilli Episeyo—with a liquefaction capacity of 2.45 million tonnes per annum—will begin operations in 2027, processing natural gas from Argentina’s Vaca Muerta shale formation in Neuquén Province for a period of 20 years.
Highlighting Industry Dynamics and Strategic Importance
This assignment underscores Seatrium’s expertise in converting, upgrading, and life-extending FLNG assets. The firm previously delivered the FLNG Gimi to Golar, which is now commercialized at the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim gas field.
The contract also reinforces the broader shift toward floating LNG (FLNG) solutions as strategic enablers of energy transition. FLNG platforms, like Hilli Episeyo, present advantages over traditional land-based liquefaction facilities—offering faster deployment, lower capital outlays, and flexible location options, particularly beneficial in regions facing environmental and regulatory constraints.
