Lagos, Nigeria — A United States trade delegation visiting Nigeria has lauded APM Terminals Apapa for its world-class operational standards, talent development programs, and alignment with international best practices. The commendation came during a 10-day trade mission to Nigeria and Kenya, aimed at strengthening economic cooperation in transport, infrastructure, climate sustainability, and technology.
The delegation, led by California’s Secretary of Transportation, Toks Omishakin, included representatives from the California State Transportation Agency (CalSTA), the Bay Area Council, and the University of California, Davis. At the conclusion of a tour of Nigeria’s busiest container terminal, Omishakin expressed admiration for the scale and sophistication of the operations.
“I am impressed with the operations here. They are very progressive. The staff we met are clearly high-calibre people, who can work with us in California and in the United States,” Omishakin stated. He further noted that many Americans might hold outdated perceptions of African port facilities, but what he witnessed at Apapa was “a world-class operation on par with many U.S. West Coast terminals.”
Recognition of Operational Excellence
During the visit, the delegation was given a guided tour of the facility’s container handling equipment, digital systems, and logistics chain integration. They observed firsthand how APM Terminals Apapa manages large-scale cargo operations efficiently while adhering to safety and environmental standards.
Alex Ford, Vice President of Global Programmes at the Bay Area Council, echoed Omishakin’s sentiment. He emphasized that APM Terminals Apapa “operates at the same level as APM Terminals globally and Maersk’s international standards.” He praised the terminal for its emphasis on human capital development, adding that it serves as a training and innovation hub not only for Nigeria but for APM Terminals’ global workforce.
