Lagos, Nigeria — A United States trade delegation visiting Nigeria has lauded APM Terminals Apapa for its world-class operational standards, talent development programs, and alignment with international best practices. The commendation came during a 10-day trade mission to Nigeria and Kenya, aimed at strengthening economic cooperation in transport, infrastructure, climate sustainability, and technology.
The delegation, led by California’s Secretary of Transportation, Toks Omishakin, included representatives from the California State Transportation Agency (CalSTA), the Bay Area Council, and the University of California, Davis. At the conclusion of a tour of Nigeria’s busiest container terminal, Omishakin expressed admiration for the scale and sophistication of the operations.
“I am impressed with the operations here. They are very progressive. The staff we met are clearly high-calibre people, who can work with us in California and in the United States,” Omishakin stated. He further noted that many Americans might hold outdated perceptions of African port facilities, but what he witnessed at Apapa was “a world-class operation on par with many U.S. West Coast terminals.”
Recognition of Operational Excellence
During the visit, the delegation was given a guided tour of the facility’s container handling equipment, digital systems, and logistics chain integration. They observed firsthand how APM Terminals Apapa manages large-scale cargo operations efficiently while adhering to safety and environmental standards.
Alex Ford, Vice President of Global Programmes at the Bay Area Council, echoed Omishakin’s sentiment. He emphasized that APM Terminals Apapa “operates at the same level as APM Terminals globally and Maersk’s international standards.” He praised the terminal for its emphasis on human capital development, adding that it serves as a training and innovation hub not only for Nigeria but for APM Terminals’ global workforce.
APM Terminals’ Commitment to Nigeria
APM Terminals Apapa, located within Lagos Port Complex, is the largest container terminal in Nigeria and a critical gateway for the nation’s imports and exports. In recent years, it has invested heavily in port modernization, digital innovation, and staff training programs.
Frederik Klinke, CEO of APM Terminals Nigeria, welcomed the delegation and underscored the importance of international partnerships:
“This visit reflects the trust and recognition of the role Apapa plays in global trade. We see it as an opportunity to deepen cooperation, share knowledge, and build stronger partnerships with California and beyond.”
Terminal Manager Steen Knudsen added that APM Terminals Apapa is consistently working to align with global innovations in terminal operations, including digital cargo visibility, automation readiness, and enhanced sustainability practices.
Focus on Talent and Sustainability
One of the standout themes of the visit was APM Terminals’ emphasis on talent empowerment. The U.S. delegation expressed admiration for the structured training and mentorship programs that prepare Nigerian staff for international leadership positions within the company.
In addition, discussions touched on green port initiatives. The delegation highlighted opportunities for collaboration in decarbonization, including shore power facilities for ships, renewable energy integration, and reducing emissions from cargo handling equipment. Both sides expressed interest in knowledge sharing to accelerate the transition toward cleaner port operations.
Strengthening U.S.–Nigeria Trade Ties
The visit comes at a time when the U.S. is actively seeking to deepen trade links with Africa. California, with its massive logistics and shipping infrastructure, views Nigeria as a key partner in expanding trans-Pacific and trans-Atlantic trade.
By spotlighting APM Terminals Apapa as a world-class facility, the delegation signaled confidence in Nigeria’s role as a strategic logistics hub for West Africa. The commendation also highlights the growing recognition of Nigerian ports as capable of handling international trade at the highest operational standards.
Analysis: A Step Forward for African Port Competitiveness
This recognition places APM Terminals Apapa in the spotlight as a benchmark for African ports striving to modernize. For Nigeria, the commendation not only boosts investor confidence but also supports the government’s ongoing efforts to expand the nation’s role in global shipping and logistics.
The emphasis on talent and sustainability positions APM Terminals Apapa as more than just a cargo gateway. It is increasingly seen as a center for innovation, training, and green transition in the region’s maritime industry.
