The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) acted promptly following a report on August 12, 2025, that an unmanned vessel—described as a “ghost ship”—was drifting toward the Semangkok A offshore oil platform near Terengganu.
Detection and Immediate Action
An alert from the oil platform reached MMEA’s Maritime Rescue Sub Centre in Kuantan at around 4:45 p.m. The ghost ship was visible approximately four nautical miles from the rig, prompting concern over a potential collision hazard.
In response, Malaysia’s Special Task and Rescue (STAR) team was mobilized. The team boarded the vessel at approximately 6:58 p.m., secured it with a towline, and coordinated its transfer to a rescue vessel, leading to its eventual tow to the Kemaman Supply Base (KSB).
Towing and Inspection Operation
The tow, conducted over two days and spanning 140 nautical miles, involved close coordination with multiple agencies—including MMEA, the Marine Department, Petronas, and other private partners.
Upon reaching KSB on August 15, a Hazmat team from the Fire and Rescue Department, along with marine department officers, boarded the 53.7-meter-long vessel. Using advanced detection equipment, they conducted thorough inspections for hazardous chemicals, gases, or human remains. Thankfully, none were found—only an unpleasant odor traced to raw materials in a refrigerator.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities continue to investigate the vessel’s origin and identity. They suspect it may be linked to an earlier incident involving a fire aboard a foreign oil tanker near Tanjung Sedili Kecil, off Johor’s coast, in early August.
In the meantime, patrols around the ship’s area are ongoing to ensure safety and prevent unauthorized access. The vessel will be transferred to the Marine Department for further legal and procedural actions.
