Miami Beach, on July 28, 2025, a tragic maritime accident left two children dead and two others critically injured after a sailboat carrying participants of a youth sailing program collided with a construction barge in the waters off Miami Beach.
The collision occurred around 11:00 a.m. near Hibiscus Island, in a channel frequently used by both recreational and commercial vessels. The sailboat, operated as part of the Miami Yacht Club’s summer sailing camp, was carrying five children between the ages of 7 and 13, along with a 19-year-old female camp counselor. According to authorities, the vessel was struck by a barge involved in nearby construction work, resulting in the small sailboat capsizing. Multiple victims were reportedly trapped underneath the barge’s hull.
Emergency responders from Miami Beach Fire Rescue, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, City of Miami Fire Rescue, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to the incident. All six individuals were recovered from the water and rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital. Sadly, a 7-year-old and a 13-year-old girl were later pronounced dead. Two other children remain hospitalized in critical condition. The camp counselor and a 12-year-old girl were treated at the scene and did not require hospitalization.
The U.S. Coast Guard has enforced a 250-yard safety perimeter around the submerged wreck as recovery operations and a formal investigation proceed. The barge and sailboat remain at the scene as authorities work to determine the cause of the collision.
Captain Frank Florio, Commander of Coast Guard Sector Miami, expressed condolences to the families and emphasized that a full investigation would be conducted to establish what went wrong and what safety lessons can be learned. He acknowledged the emotional toll on Miami’s tight-knit maritime community, especially in the context of youth training and education at sea.
The Miami Yacht Club, which oversees the Miami Youth Sailing Foundation, confirmed its cooperation with investigators and stated that safety remains its top priority. No official statement has been released regarding operational changes or policy reviews following the tragedy.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is also actively involved in the investigation. Preliminary findings suggest that visibility and navigational right-of-way issues may have contributed to the incident, although no official cause has yet been confirmed.
This incident has renewed attention on safety in shared maritime zones, particularly in areas where recreational programs and commercial operations overlap. While collisions of this nature are rare, the consequences are often devastating. Maritime safety advocates are expected to call for increased regulation or improved coordination in high-traffic waterways used by youth programs.
As the community mourns, maritime authorities continue to gather evidence and witness testimony to build a clear picture of what led to the fatal incident.
