ALTINOVA, TURKEY — July 2025 — In a major advancement for maritime decarbonization, global towage provider Svitzer has officially taken delivery of its first fully electric tugboat, the ElectRA 2500SX, from Sanmar Shipyards in Turkey. The delivery ceremony took place at Sanmar’s Altinova shipyard and marks a critical step in Svitzer’s strategy to reduce carbon emissions and transition to greener, more sustainable towage operations.

This handover is more than a transaction—it is a signal to the global maritime community that the electric tug era is no longer theoretical but operational.

An Engineering Feat for Emissions-Free Port Operations

The ElectRA 2500SX represents the culmination of years of innovation and cross-industry collaboration. Designed by Canada-based naval architects Robert Allan Ltd., the vessel is part of the ElectRA series—a lineup specifically engineered for 100% battery-powered, zero-emission port operations.

With an overall length of 25.4 meters, a beam of 12.86 meters, and a maximum draft of 5.4 meters, the tug is compact yet powerful. She is equipped with 1,808 kWh of battery capacity, delivering a bollard pull of approximately 70 tonnes—sufficient for heavy ship-handling operations at major ports. The tug also meets Firefighting 1 (FiFi 1) standards, further enhancing her operational utility.

Propulsion is delivered through electric motors powered by high-capacity lithium-ion batteries, supplied by Corvus Energy. This setup eliminates the need for diesel generators during standard operations, resulting in zero direct emissions, drastically reduced noise, and lower maintenance costs.

Svitzer and Sanmar: A Decade-Long Partnership

The ElectRA 2500SX is the first fully electric tugboat delivered to Svitzer, but it is the 30th tugboat overall to be constructed by Sanmar for the company—highlighting a decade of collaboration in delivering modern, innovative vessels. Sanmar Shipyards is now one of the world’s foremost builders of electric and hybrid tugboats. The company has already delivered nine fully electric tugs, with six more currently under construction, positioning it as a key player in the transition to clean maritime operations.

This delivery is also a strong endorsement of Sanmar’s production capabilities in clean propulsion. The shipyard has invested in advanced electrical integration processes and quality control systems specifically designed to support the growth of battery-operated vessels.

Leadership Vision: A New Era of Green Towage

İpek Gürün, Corporate Strategy Director at Sanmar Shipyards, described the ElectRA 2500SX as “a milestone in environmental innovation,” emphasizing that it combines high performance, simplified operations, and environmental responsibility. She noted that the vessel proves full electric power can match, and in some cases exceed, the capabilities of conventional diesel-powered tugs in daily operations.

Kasper Karlsen, Group Chief Operating Officer at Svitzer, reinforced this perspective. He described the acquisition as a pivotal achievement within Svitzer’s broader decarbonisation roadmap. “We have set ambitious goals to reach net zero emissions in the coming decades, and this delivery is proof that the technology to help us get there is not only available—it’s reliable, tested, and ready for deployment,” Karlsen said.

More Than a Tug: A Statement on the Future

The delivery of the ElectRA 2500SX is symbolic of broader trends in maritime innovation. As regulators, ports, and customers demand lower-emission operations, towage providers like Svitzer are leading the charge in adopting next-generation solutions. Electric tugs offer a scalable, shore-connected option for busy ports with the infrastructure to support charging and energy management.

The benefits of full-electric tugs go beyond carbon reductions. The elimination of combustion engines significantly reduces onboard noise, providing a safer and more comfortable environment for crew. Operational costs—particularly fuel and maintenance—are expected to decline over the vessel’s lifespan. These advantages align well with the commercial pressures facing shipping and towage operators worldwide.

Integration and Global Deployment

Following sea trials and systems testing, the ElectRA 2500SX will be deployed to a major European port, where it will operate under real-world commercial conditions. The tug is expected to support a variety of missions, including ship berthing, unberthing, and emergency towage, all while running entirely on electric power.

Svitzer has not publicly disclosed the port of deployment yet, but sources suggest that several Northern European ports, including those in Denmark, the Netherlands, and Germany, are front-runners due to their advanced shore-charging infrastructure and environmental mandates.

Roadmap for the Future

The delivery is part of Svitzer’s broader sustainability and innovation roadmap, which includes investments in hybrid tugs, low-carbon fuels, and the gradual phase-out of conventional diesel assets. The company is also working closely with port authorities and energy providers to accelerate the installation of shore-based charging stations to support 24/7 electric tug operations.

Sanmar, meanwhile, continues to expand its electric tug portfolio. The shipyard has committed to ramping up production of electric vessels in response to growing global demand. It is also engaged in research partnerships aimed at increasing battery efficiency, energy management software integration, and smart-charging systems.

Conclusion

The delivery of the ElectRA 2500SX is a defining moment in the evolution of clean maritime operations. As one of the world’s first fully electric tugs built at commercial scale, it represents not only an engineering triumph but also a strategic shift for the global towage industry. Svitzer’s commitment, Sanmar’s technical prowess, and the backing of naval architects like Robert Allan Ltd. collectively mark the start of a new chapter—one where zero-emission vessels are not just possible, but preferred.

All in Maritime News will continue to monitor deployment updates, real-world performance data, and follow-on orders as electric towage moves from pioneering concept to global standard.
