Barcelona, Spain — Hutchison Ports’ Barcelona Europe South Terminal (BEST) has announced a significant step forward in its decarbonisation roadmap with plans to procure 26 fully electric low-height straddle carriers, positioning the terminal among the Mediterranean’s frontrunners in zero-emission port operations.
The new electric fleet marks one of BEST’s most ambitious sustainability investments to date and reinforces the Port of Barcelona’s strategic commitment to becoming a benchmark green logistics hub. Once deployed, the carriers will replace older diesel-powered units, delivering a measurable reduction in emissions, noise, and energy consumption across the yard.
A Milestone in Zero-Emission Cargo Handling
The low-height electric straddle carriers are engineered to support BEST’s semi-automated operations, offering improved reliability, lower lifecycle costs, and enhanced performance in high-intensity container movements. Their integration is expected to streamline yard traffic, reduce operational bottlenecks, and boost overall terminal efficiency.
Terminal officials noted that the shift to full-electric machinery is essential for maintaining competitiveness and aligning with EU environmental targets. The Port of Barcelona has been implementing targeted electrification initiatives—including shore power connectivity and alternative fuel deployment—as part of its broader Green Port strategy.
Strengthening BEST’s Technological Edge
BEST is widely recognised as one of the Mediterranean’s most technologically advanced container terminals, operating with a high degree of automation and using one of Europe’s largest fleets of automated stacking cranes. The procurement of these 26 electric straddle carriers further consolidates this leadership, signalling Hutchison Ports’ long-term commitment to innovation and sustainable development.
The investment aligns with Hutchison Ports’ global ambition to decarbonise terminal operations and transition to renewable power sources across its network. By shifting to electric carriers, the terminal expects to achieve notable reductions in CO₂ emissions, while also improving working conditions through quieter, vibration-free operations.
Positioning Barcelona at the Forefront of Green Port Development
As global supply chains push for lower emissions and cleaner logistics options, BEST’s decision further strengthens Barcelona’s strategic positioning as a preferred gateway for environmentally conscious shippers. The terminal continues to transform itself into a modernised, electrified, and resilient port asset capable of handling future trade demands responsibly.
The deployment timeline for the new electric straddle carriers is expected to be announced in the coming months, with delivery and commissioning likely to begin in phases once procurement is finalised.
