Russia’s Black Sea port of Tuapse was engulfed in flames on the night of November 1–2 after a major Ukrainian drone attack targeted the country’s critical oil export terminal in Krasnodar Krai.
According to Russian regional authorities, several drones struck loading facilities at the Tuapse oil terminal, triggering multiple explosions and fires. A tanker moored alongside the terminal sustained deck damage, forcing the crew to evacuate as flames spread across the berth area. Local emergency units battled the fire for several hours before bringing it under control.
Satellite imagery and port reports indicate that two foreign-flagged merchant vessels were damaged during the strike, and oil slicks were later observed spreading into Tuapse Bay. Environmental agencies are assessing the extent of the spill.
The Tuapse terminal is one of Russia’s key deep-water export points on the Black Sea. Operated under Rosneft’s logistics network, it handles millions of tons of crude and refined petroleum products annually, supplying markets in Asia and the Mediterranean. Its disruption poses a serious setback to Russia’s southern oil supply chain.
Military and maritime analysts view the strike as part of Ukraine’s continuing campaign to degrade Russia’s energy infrastructure. By targeting export terminals rather than inland refineries, Kyiv aims to hit revenue streams that directly support Moscow’s war economy.
The attack has raised concerns among shipping operators, insurers, and port service providers over escalating risks in the Black Sea region. Increased insurance premiums, vessel rerouting, and potential delays in port operations are expected to follow as security measures tighten.
Although Russian officials reported no fatalities, the scale of the damage remains unclear, and the Tuapse terminal’s operational status is uncertain. The incident marks one of the most significant attacks on Russia’s maritime oil infrastructure since the conflict began, signaling a further escalation in the use of long-range drones in the ongoing war.
