Kochi, India – October 29, 2025:
India’s naval hydrographic capability is set for a major leap forward as the Indian Navy prepares to commission INS Ikshak, the third ship in its Survey Vessel (Large) series, on 6 November 2025 at the Southern Naval Command in Kochi. The event will be presided over by Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff, underscoring the Navy’s growing emphasis on indigenous development and advanced maritime domain awareness.

A Landmark in Indigenous Naval Construction

Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd (GRSE), Kolkata, INS Ikshak represents over 80 percent indigenous content, aligning squarely with the Government of India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The vessel—whose name translates to “The Guide”—symbolizes India’s growing self-sufficiency in designing, constructing and outfitting sophisticated hydrographic platforms.

The Survey Vessel (Large) project was initiated under a 2018 contract between the Ministry of Defence and GRSE for four advanced survey vessels. INS Ikshak follows her sister ships INS Sandhayak and INS Nirdeshak, continuing a class designed to replace older survey vessels and modernize the Navy’s hydrographic fleet.

Design, Capabilities and Roles

INS Ikshak, measuring approximately 110 metres in length and displacing around 3,400 tonnes, is equipped with a suite of modern hydrographic and oceanographic instruments. These include state-of-the-art multibeam echo sounders, side-scan sonars, and autonomous survey boats, allowing for comprehensive charting of India’s coastline, ports, and approaches.

While its primary mission is hydrographic surveying, the ship is designed for dual-use functionality. It can support Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations and be configured as a hospital ship during emergencies, making it a valuable multipurpose platform in regional crisis response.

The vessel can also embark smaller craft, conduct deep-water data collection, and provide real-time analysis for navigational safety and seabed mapping. Its endurance and self-sustaining systems allow for extended deployment in the Indian Ocean and beyond.

A Step Toward Inclusive Naval Infrastructure

A noteworthy feature of INS Ikshak is its dedicated accommodation for women officers and sailors, a first for this class of ships. The inclusion of gender-sensitive infrastructure reflects the Navy’s ongoing commitment to inclusivity and modernization in human resource policies, ensuring operational readiness in mixed-gender deployments.

This design innovation marks a significant step for naval and maritime industries in setting new standards for gender inclusivity in shipbuilding, training, and personnel management.

Strategic and Regional Significance

The induction of INS Ikshak comes at a time when hydrographic surveying and maritime domain awareness are of growing strategic importance. The vessel enhances India’s ability to chart its vast Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), monitor undersea infrastructure, and ensure navigational safety across vital trade routes in the Indo-Pacific region.

Moreover, by strengthening its domestic shipbuilding and survey capabilities, India continues to reinforce its position as a regional maritime leader, contributing to safe and sustainable use of ocean spaces. The vessel’s ability to collect, analyze, and distribute geophysical data also benefits civil sectors such as port management, offshore energy exploration, and coastal engineering.

Industrial and Economic Implications

The construction of INS Ikshak has had far-reaching effects on India’s maritime industrial ecosystem, engaging Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) across the country in component supply, design, and systems integration. This aligns with India’s vision to develop a resilient defence-industrial base while promoting innovation and technological self-reliance.

The project also underscores GRSE’s growing role as a global shipbuilder, capable of delivering complex naval platforms on schedule and to international standards.

Implications for Maritime Survey and Service Providers

For companies in the hydrographic and marine survey sector—such as Observater Surveys and Services Limited—the commissioning of INS Ikshak represents both a technological benchmark and a market opportunity.

  • Benchmarking Quality: The vessel’s advanced instrumentation sets new standards for precision and data quality, encouraging civilian survey operators to align their capabilities with military-grade hydrographic accuracy.
  • Collaboration Potential: With India’s Navy expanding its hydrographic operations, there will likely be increased opportunities for collaboration with private survey entities in data management, coastal mapping, and oceanographic research.
  • Sector Growth: Enhanced survey coverage by naval assets may generate demand for supporting services in data validation, environmental monitoring, and infrastructure planning across ports and coastal industries.

Broader Maritime Context

INS Ikshak’s commissioning follows a series of developments that collectively define the direction of India’s maritime growth:

  • The Navy’s continued modernization of its survey fleet.
  • Expansion of dual-role ship concepts emphasizing flexibility and disaster-readiness.
  • Progressive inclusion of women in operational maritime roles.
  • Strengthening of India’s naval presence in the Indo-Pacific as part of a broader strategy to ensure freedom of navigation and regional stability.

Conclusion

INS Ikshak embodies India’s growing maritime ambition—technologically advanced, operationally flexible, and socially progressive. Its commissioning will not only expand the Navy’s hydrographic and humanitarian capabilities but also symbolize a significant stride in India’s journey toward maritime self-reliance and inclusive naval modernization.

As the vessel joins the fleet this November, it carries with it not only advanced survey technology but also the promise of a more capable, equitable, and self-reliant Indian maritime future.
