Shimoni Port, Kenya — A new chapter in Kenya’s maritime and tourism landscape was written today as Shimoni Port in Kwale County welcomed its first-ever cruise vessel, the SH Diana. The luxury liner’s arrival marks a historic milestone for the newly completed port and cements the South Coast’s position as an emerging hub for cruise tourism.
The SH Diana, operated by Swan Hellenic Cruises, docked at Shimoni carrying 249 international passengers on board. The vessel was received with ceremony and cultural flair by officials from the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), Kwale County Government, Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), and other tourism stakeholders.
A Boost for South Coast Tourism
Passengers disembarking from the vessel were treated to excursions across some of Kwale’s most iconic attractions, including the world-renowned Kisite Mpunguti Marine Park and Reserve, Wasini Island, and historic coastal sites that showcase the region’s rich Swahili heritage.
Kwale’s pristine beaches — consistently voted ‘Best in Africa’ for five consecutive years by the World Travel Awards — formed a fitting backdrop for the occasion. The arrival of the SH Diana underscores growing international recognition of the region’s tourism potential and the government’s investment in port infrastructure to support this growth.
A National Milestone in Cruise Tourism
Speaking on behalf of KPA Managing Director Captain William Ruto, Acting Manager for Corporate Communication Mr. Dave Jones Buchere hailed the event as a “landmark achievement” for the South Coast.
“The arrival of SH Diana at Shimoni Port is a testament to Kenya’s expanding cruise tourism footprint. This facility not only strengthens our maritime capacity but also opens new economic and social opportunities for local communities,” Mr. Buchere said.
He added that the new port is expected to spur job creation, investment in hospitality, and community-based tourism, aligning with the government’s broader agenda to diversify Kenya’s tourism economy and make it more inclusive.
Strategic Advantage for Kwale
Located near the marine parks and islands of the South Coast, Shimoni Port’s strategic position gives it a unique advantage for serving cruise traffic and eco-tourism activities. The port is also expected to complement the Port of Mombasa and the smaller Lamu Cruise Terminal, offering cruise operators more flexible itinerary options along Kenya’s coastline.
Governor Hon. Fatma Achani, who led the Kwale County delegation at the event, lauded the development as “transformational” for the county’s tourism and economic outlook.
“This milestone demonstrates that Kwale is ready to host the world,” she said. “Shimoni Port will connect our local communities to global opportunities, boost business for local entrepreneurs, and showcase our natural and cultural heritage to the world.”
SH Diana: A Familiar Visitor, New Destination
While SH Diana has previously made regular annual calls to Mombasa and Lamu, this was her first visit to Shimoni, symbolizing growing confidence among cruise operators in Kenya’s emerging destinations. The vessel, known for its blend of adventure and luxury, will now include Shimoni among its recurring stops along the East African coast.
A Turning Point for Kenya’s Blue Economy
The successful reception of SH Diana at Shimoni Port is seen as a pivotal moment in Kenya’s blue economy strategy, particularly in the expansion of cruise tourism infrastructure beyond Mombasa.
