Mombasa, Kenya – October 20, 2025
The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has announced an 80% waiver on storage charges for long-stay containers at the Port of Mombasa, in a move aimed at easing congestion and encouraging cargo clearance.
In a notice dated 15th October 2025, KPA Managing Director Captain William K. Ruto said the amnesty applies to both domestic and transit containers that have remained at the port for more than 21 days from the date of the notice. The waiver will remain in effect until 6th November 2025.
Under the new directive, domestic containers will be eligible for an 80% waiver on port storage charges once affected customers lodge a formal waiver application. Similarly, transit containers destined for neighboring countries through the Mombasa corridor will also enjoy the same level of waiver.
However, the Authority cautioned that any containers not cleared within the amnesty period will revert to normal storage rates, including charges at the Naivasha Inland Container Depot (ICD) for transit cargo transferred there at the owners’ cost.
KPA said the initiative is part of its ongoing efforts to decongest the Port of Mombasa, improve operational efficiency, and support trade facilitation across the region.
Cargo owners are encouraged to take advantage of the limited amnesty period to clear their long-stay containers and avoid accruing additional costs once normal tariffs resume.
