Eritrea has taken a significant step toward enhancing its national capacity to respond to marine pollution incidents, with a new workshop bringing together senior government officials and operational experts to bolster preparedness for oil and hazardous and noxious substances (HNS) spills.
The national workshop, organized under the framework of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) technical cooperation initiatives, aimed to strengthen coordination among Eritrea’s maritime, environmental, and port authorities. Participants reviewed international best practices in pollution prevention, contingency planning, and emergency response operations, focusing on the requirements of the OPRC and OPRC-HNS Conventions.
Sessions also addressed the development of a national contingency plan, inter-agency communication mechanisms, and practical approaches to spill response at sea and in port environments. Experts emphasized the importance of capacity building, equipment readiness, and regional collaboration—key components in mitigating the risks associated with oil and chemical spills along the Red Sea coast.
Eritrea’s strategic location along one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes underscores the importance of such preparedness. With increasing tanker traffic and port activity in the Horn of Africa, strengthening national and regional response capabilities remains critical for safeguarding marine ecosystems and coastal livelihoods.
“Building national capacity for oil and HNS spill response is not only about compliance—it is about protecting people, the environment, and the economy,” said an IMO representative during the workshop. “Eritrea’s proactive engagement sets a strong example for other coastal states in the region.”
The workshop concluded with a commitment to further training and the integration of international response frameworks, reinforcing Eritrea’s alignment with global maritime safety and environmental protection standards.
