Dubai, September 30, 2025 — The United Arab Emirates this week welcomed maritime leaders, policymakers, innovators, and seafarers from across the globe as it hosted the World Maritime Day Parallel Event (WMDPE) 2025 in Dubai. Organized under the auspices of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the gathering ran alongside the IMO’s global observance of World Maritime Day, uniting industry and government stakeholders to explore this year’s theme: “Our Ocean – Our Obligation – Our Opportunity.”
The high-profile event opened with an address by UAE leaders, highlighting the country’s role as a global maritime hub and reaffirming its dedication to advancing decarbonisation, digitalisation, and safety in shipping. The opening ceremony also included a tour of the Maritime Exhibition, where cutting-edge solutions in green technologies, autonomous shipping, and maritime workforce development were showcased.
Global Dialogue on Sustainability and Innovation
The conference sessions brought together ministers, shipping executives, and technology experts to tackle pressing challenges and opportunities facing the industry. Discussions focused on:
- Decarbonisation & Green Fuels: Delegates reviewed progress toward IMO’s 2050 greenhouse gas reduction targets, with debates over the viability of biofuels, methanol, ammonia, and hydrogen.
- Digitalisation & AI: Experts highlighted the role of artificial intelligence, data-driven decision-making, and automation in optimizing operations while improving safety and efficiency.
- Maritime Workforce & Inclusion: Panels stressed the importance of building a resilient and diverse workforce. Issues such as seafarer welfare, gender equality, and digital skills training were central to discussions.
- Ocean Governance & Blue Economy: Policymakers underscored the importance of balancing economic opportunities with environmental stewardship, noting that sustainable ocean governance is a collective responsibility.
Showcasing the UAE’s Maritime Strength
As host nation, the UAE emphasized its growing influence in global shipping and logistics, with Dubai positioned as a gateway between East and West. The Maritime Exhibition featured homegrown and international innovators presenting new vessel technologies, port infrastructure upgrades, and energy-efficient shipping solutions.
UAE officials stressed that the event underscored the nation’s commitment to sustainable development goals (SDGs) and its vision to be at the forefront of shaping the future of maritime trade.
IMO’s Call to Action
IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez praised the UAE for hosting and urged all stakeholders to embrace this year’s theme in practice, not just policy. “Our oceans are a shared resource,” he said. “They are our obligation to protect, but also our greatest opportunity to build sustainable prosperity through maritime trade.”
Looking Ahead
The World Maritime Day Parallel Event has grown into one of the most important platforms for dialogue between governments and industry. By convening in Dubai, delegates not only exchanged ideas but also reaffirmed that collaboration, innovation, and shared responsibility will drive the sector forward.
As the curtains closed on this year’s event, the resounding message was clear: the maritime industry stands united in turning obligation into opportunity, ensuring that oceans remain a lifeline for generations to come.
