Norwegian authorities have seized a Russian fishing vessel after it reportedly remained in port beyond its authorized period, raising fresh maritime tensions between Oslo and Moscow.
The incident occurred in Tromsø, where the trawler had been undergoing routine maintenance. According to Norway’s Directorate of Fisheries, the vessel exceeded the permitted time frame for foreign-flagged fishing vessels in port, triggering enforcement action under Norway’s strict maritime and fisheries regulations.
Coast Guard officials boarded the ship earlier this week and ordered it detained pending further investigation. Norwegian law allows for fines, confiscation of catch, or even the impoundment of vessels if operators breach port entry and stay regulations.
“Norway enforces its maritime laws without exception, regardless of flag,” a spokesperson for the Directorate of Fisheries said. “This case is being handled in line with established procedures for vessels overstaying their port clearance.”
The seizure comes against a backdrop of heightened scrutiny of Russian vessels operating in Norwegian waters. Since the onset of the Ukraine conflict, Norway has imposed stricter controls on Russian-flagged ships, limiting their access to a small number of designated ports for essential services such as crew changes and repairs.
Analysts note that while the incident appears procedural, it could have wider diplomatic implications. Russia has previously accused Norway of discriminatory treatment of its fishing fleet, a claim Oslo denies, stressing that measures are grounded in European Union and national sanctions regimes.
The detained vessel is expected to remain under guard until Norwegian authorities conclude their inquiry.
