KISUMU, Kenya : Exciting developments are underway at Lwang’ni Beach in Kisumu County, where the Kenya Maritime Authority (@kmakenya) has commenced the construction of a state-of-the-art Marine Rescue Center. This landmark project is set to transform safety and emergency response efforts across Kenya’s inland waterways.
Once completed, the facility will serve as a central hub for maritime rescue operations on Lake Victoria, significantly improving response times to emergencies such as boat accidents, capsizing, and flooding incidents. It will also offer critical support for search and rescue (SAR) missions and disaster preparedness in the region.

“This Marine Rescue Center is a game-changer,” said a spokesperson from the Kenya Maritime Authority. “We’re not just building infrastructure—we’re saving lives, empowering communities, and raising the standard of water transport safety in inland Kenya.”
The rescue center will be equipped with high-speed boats, modern communication systems, first aid and emergency medical services, and professional rescue teams trained for inland water operations. It also aligns with Kenya’s Blue Economy Strategy, which emphasizes safety, sustainability, and development in maritime zones.
The initiative has been welcomed by local residents, fishermen, and transport operators, many of whom have long called for stronger safety measures on Lake Victoria—the largest freshwater lake in Africa and a vital lifeline for trade, transport, and livelihoods in the region.
The project is being implemented in close collaboration with Kisumu County Government and other emergency services, with completion expected in early 2026.
